Boil water advisory in place for some Swansea residents

Swansea, SC (WOLO) — Several areas in the Town of Swansea have been place under a water boil advisory after the water department says contractors accidentally punctured a 2 inch galvanized water main while trying to replace an outdated, leaking one along S Breacon Ave. . While there have been no confirmed cases of contamination, town officials say the low water pressure many are experiencing has the potential for contamination to remain present in the system.

Officials tell us the damaged water main was replaced, and the were flushed, but the department won’t be able to take bacteriological samples until Monday as soon as the laboratory is open and are hopeful service will be fully restored no later than Tuesday.

The following areas are being asked to boil there water for one full minute before cooking or drinking your water And not to consume ice that has not been boiled first.

Locations

  • W 5th St, S Spring St (South of W 5th St)
  • S Monmouth Ave (South of W 5th St, S Breacon Ave), (South of W 3rd St)
  • W 8th St
  •  W 7th St
  • S Church St (from W 7th to the 900 block),

Officials say residents should expect to the presence of chlorine in their water while they continue disinfecting the water to make sure there are in fact no contamination in the water system.

Contractors accidently bored into a 2” Galvanized water main today during the course of replacing the old AC water main on S Breacon Ave. That water main was installed in the 1940s and the main valves are marginal, further justifying why we are replacing that water main. Those old leaking valves required us to shut off more area than would normally have been necessary to accomplish the repair. The damaged water main was replaced, lines flushed, boil water advisory notices were hand delivered to all affected customers. We will pull bacteriological samples Monday as soon as the laboratory is open and hopefully issue the repeal on Tuesday.  If you have any questions or require additional action, please let me know.  Thank you.
