USC wins bid for land near Williams-Brice Stadium

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The University of South Carolina has won the battle for 300 acres of land near its football stadium, and says the land will be used for student activities.
Local media outlets report the school was high bidder in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Thursday after its rival for the land decided not to increase its bid.
Vulcan Materials Co. was also interested in the land. Company spokesman Jimmy Fleming said exploration of the site showed some technical constraints, including access and environmental issues.
The State of Columbia reports Russ Meekins, director of the USC Development Foundation, said while the school hasn’t drawn up plans for the land, some ideas include a short-game golf facility for the men’s and women’s teams, which likely would be open to all students, and intramural fields.
