College Board: US history course not anti-American

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Conservative activists say a new outline for the Advanced Placement U.S. history course shows an anti-American bias by either downplaying or omitting the country’s most heroic figures and military victories.
But the College Board executive who leads the Advanced Placement program told education officials Monday the critics misinterpret the framework’s purpose. Trevor Parker says it’s not meant to be a laundry list of names and events. He points out the old framework didn’t list them either.
Parker says the expanded outline is meant to give teachers a better idea of the concepts that students in the college-level course should explore, while individual teachers and state standards determine what is taught.
Education Oversight Committee members note they have no authority over the College Board or Advanced Placement exams.
