(WOLO) HANAHAN, S.C., — HANAHAN, S.C. (AP) _ The South Carolina Highway Patrol says that the Berkeley County Sheriff has been charged with DUI after an early-morning wreck. Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres says Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of a collision involving injuries. Troopers were called to the scene after the rear-end collision early Sunday involving a pickup and another vehicle. Beres said the Highway Patrol later found DeWitt to be the driver of the pickup after Hanahan Police stopped him. They used physical evidence to link the pickup to the accident. Beres said that DeWitt failed a field sobriety test and later refused a breath test. Beres didn’t have further information on the injuries or whether DeWitt had a lawyer. The 63-year-old was first elected sheriff in 1994 Jail records in Charleston County showed he was being held as of early Sunday afternoon. (Source: Associated Press)
