SC State Board of Trustees Calls Emergency Meeting

Orangeburg , S.C. (WOLO) — Thursday morning the South Carolina State University’s board of trustees held an emergency meeting to discuss the legislative proposal to shut the school down for a year. After spending more than 3 hours inside the executive session Thursday, the South Carolina State Board of Trustees said they decided to take no action. “We have an employment contract with our president also a public document which we will respect,” said Chairman Dr. William Small, Jr. “Honoring this contract of course includes a professional perform evaluation which we will perform and make public.” That is the message from board of trustees Chairman, Dr. Small, Jr. just one day after the black caucus took a vote of no confidence in the university’s leadership. “This committee did not have the confidence to move forward with their leader,” said Rep. Carl Anderson. President Elzey and SC State have been in the spotlight this week since a house subcommittee advanced a proposal that would close the school temporarily while it get’s it’s financial troubles in order. “There’s not a willingness to take the actions necessary to solve that debt,” said Rep. Merrill. Despite those claims, President Elzey said Thursday, the University is taking their financial situation seriously and has presented a comprehensive plan. “We’ve talked at our University over the last year about a number of options to right size the University that include reduction in work force, cuts in athletic programs and other measures,” said President Elzey. The board of trustees said they will cooperate with the General Assembly. At the end of the day, they said the students of SC Sate are most important. “We’re committed and continue to take steps to ensure they receive the quality education they deserve from the university,” said President Elzey. Rallies are scheduled to support the University Saturday in Charleston and Monday at the Statehouse.
