Upstate; northern Midlands, Pee Dee gets ready for snow, ice

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Forecasters say snow followed by freezing rain is possible across northern South Carolina.

The National Weather Service says snow and freezing rain will fall along and north of a line from Anderson to Newberry to Camden to Darlington. The heaviest ice is expected to stick to trees and power lines in areas around Greenville, Spartanburg and Rock Hill and points north.

The winter weather should start Monday afternoon and continue through early Tuesday.

Forecasters expect around a quarter-inch of ice. A half-inch is the threshold where widespread power outages can be expected.

Utilities say they are ready to respond. The state Department of Transportation has also started treating roads where snow and ice is expected.

The Upstate’s last major ice storm was in December 2005. About 400,000 people lost power.
