Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — The numbers are staggering, the most recent reports rank South Carolina 2nd in the nation for women killed by men and the States Attorney General said this legislative session is the time to change that. “We just talk and talk and talk,” said Attorney General Alan Wilson. “It’s time for action, men and women, mostly women are dying every year.” On Thursday, the Attorney General addressed the two separate domestic violence bills that recently passed in each chamber. “Now both these bills, while neither is 100-percent perfect in my view, they are infinitely better than where we were at the beginning of the session,” said Attorney General Wilson. The two proposals are very similar, both create stricter penalties but they have different guidelines for gun restrictions. The Attorney General said that issue alone should not stop lawmakers from passing a bill this session. “I believe that if we can get a bill that has the tiered penalties, which both bills have and with aggravating factors, that’ll give front line cops and prosecutors the tools that they need to adequately prosecute and investigate these cases then I believe we’ll have 80-percent of the solution,” explained Attorney General Wilson. The Attorney General said he commends leaders in both chambers for acting quickly on the legislation. Now it is up to lawmakers to reach a compromise and send a reconciled bill to the Governor’s desk before the session ends in June.
