Ex-Williamsburg sheriff now facing state misconduct charge

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former South Carolina sheriff serving federal prison time for fraud now faces state charges.

Attorney General Alan Wilson said Thursday that former Williamsburg County Sheriff Michael Johnson had been indicted for misconduct in office.

Authorities say Johnson used sheriff’s department money to buy and fix recreational vehicles and gave them to a deputy for personal use.

Johnson faces up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted on the state charge. He was sentenced in March to two and a half years in federal prison for creating fake police reports to help a friend’s credit-repair business.

Johnson is in a minimum-security prison in West Virginia.
