Charleston Mayor Joe Riley wages final campaign
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is waging his final political campaign after nearly 40 years in office.
Riley seeks a 10th term as mayor in a five-way nonpartisan election Tuesday.
Even his opponents credit him with a Charleston renaissance that has seen the creation of the Spoleto Festival USA and the revitalization of the city into one of the world’s more popular tourist destinations.
But they also question his handling of Charleston’s growing cruise industry. And they have raised an issue opponents have raised in the past with little success — that the 68-year-old Riley has simply been mayor too long.
But Riley says people don’t put limits on their friendships or relationships with doctors, and what they really want is good government.
