35-year-old man dies in jail hours after arrival
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 35-year-old North Charleston man died shortly after officers arrested him on a gun charge.
The Charleston County coroner’s office says 35-year-old Lucious Kelly died Saturday morning.
Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Brady says Kelly was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Jail officials found him unresponsive in the jail about 7 a.m., just two hours after his arrival.
Authorities say workers tried to revive him, and paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
State and local law enforcement are investigating what happened. The coroner’s office will perform an autopsy.
An attorney representing the family says Kelly suffered from sickle cell, asthma and high blood pressure.
