COLUMBIA, S.C.(WOLO) — Friday afternoon, fans of all ages descended on Columbia to get ready for the 2012 baseball season opener. The Gamecocks took on VMI in the first game of the season opening weekend series. “I’ve been doing this for 60 years, it’s just habit,” says George Brown, a Gamecock fan. Others experienced their first Gamecock game on Friday, while those a little older came with their glove, ready to catch a foul ball. Of course fans also came to watch their favorite player. All around there was plenty of tailgating and lots of grilling out. Fans even stood in line outside the gates of Carolina Stadium hours before the first pitch, in hopes of getting that perfect seat inside the stadium. Other fans were busy trying to find tickets. But whether the fans watched from inside the stadium or in the parking lot, the words, “Go Cocks,” were heard a lot, Friday afternoon. The Gamecocks defeated VMI 2-1 on Friday. The teams will play again Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Carolina Stadium.
