COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Nearly a month after several pit bulls were stolen from a Columbia animal shelter and transported to Bamberg County to be placed in a dog training compound, the dogs return to Columbia and shelter officials claim many of them are ready to be adopted. Marli Drum, Superintendent with the City of Columbia Animal Shelter, says eight out of more than a dozen pit bulls caught up in a dog training theft spanning Columbia and Bamberg County, have been rehabilitated and are ready to be adopted into loving homes. A black male and brown female are two of eight pits shelter officials let our cameras film Wednesday. While the animals are back on the road to possibly finding new homes, Marli Drum and her staff are still under fire for not having security cameras in place during two of the three burglaries. A local company installed surveillance gear at no charge right before a third attempted robbery was caught on tape. “It wasn’t easy to get in here. It’s not the carelessness on anyone’s part. The truth is if somebody wants to do something bad enough they’ll find a way to do it. We are reassessing the situation the situation and trying to take better precautions in the future,” said Drum. Police have charged four men, including two juveniles, in connection with the dog thefts. The six remaining pits of the eight that were rescued, are being prepared to adopted out. If you’re interested in giving them a home, contact the City of Columbia Animal Shelter at 803-776-PETS (7387).
