First-place South Carolina (8-1, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) won its fifth in a row just days after postponing a game against Georgia because of a positive coronavirus test in the program.
Day, who has experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, comes to Carolina after spending the 2020 season as the head strength & conditioning coach at Marshall University, his second stint with the Thundering Herd.
This will be the seventh game affected by COVID for South Carolina in the last month.
The matchup against Virginia Tech will represent South Carolina’s first-ever appearance in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game and the Gamecocks will be the seventh different SEC program to play in the game.
The No. 5/4 Gamecocks are next scheduled to play on Mon., Jan. 4, at Alabama. They will be back at Colonial Life Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff against Georgia on Thu., Jan. 7.
Joining the Carolina staff for the first time in 2021 are Will Friend, who was named the offensive line coach, former Gamecock quarterback Erik Kimrey, who will serve as the tight ends coach, and Pete Lembo, who will be the Gamecocks’ associate head coach/special teams coordinator.

Kevin Harris played and started in all 10 games and led the SEC in the regular season and was seventh nationally with 1,138 rushing yards.
