South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has filled out two vacancies on his staff. Spurrier announced Friday that he hired former North Carolina assistant Joe Robinson to be the Gamecocks new special teams coordinator and tight end coach and a former Arkansas assistant Kirk Botkin to be South Carolina’s new linebackers coach.
Police say a South Carolina defensive lineman was arrested after he cursed at officers in Columbia’s Five Points bar district. Authorities say officers first approached 22-year-old Byron Jerideau after hearing him shout profanity at traffic as he tried to cross the street.

No. 24 South Carolina suffered its first SEC loss of the season in a 58-48 defeat at LSU Thursday night. The Gamecocks led 27-20 at halftime but saw the Lady Tigers’ defense, rated third in the nation behind South Carolina, step up in the second half to allow just 24.1 percent field goal shooting in the period. Aleighsa Welch led the offense with 13 points to go with her seven rebounds. La’Keisha Sutton added 10 points to the effort despite foul trouble limiting her action in the second half.
Dennis Clifford hit a short tiebreaking jumper in the lane with 42 seconds left and finished with 15 points to lift Boston College to a 59-57 win over Clemson Thursday night. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Boston College (6-10, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Andre Young led the Tigers (9-7, 1-1) with 12 points and T.J. Sapp had 11.
Kevin Steele will not return to the Clemson football staff for the 2012 season. He had been Clemson’s defensive coordinator since 2009.
South Carolina special teams coach John Butler is heading to Penn State. Butler is leaving the Gamecocks after one season to join the staff of new Nittany Lions coach Bill O’Brien. Butler is from Philadelphia. He has also coached in the Big Ten Conference before, spending four seasons at Minnesota coaching special teams and linebackers.
John Jenkins had 14 points and four of Vanderbilt’s 13 3-pointers as the Commodores won their sixth straight game with a 67-57 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday night.

Clemson running back Andre Ellington announced Tuesday night that he will return for his senior year. Ellington was Clemson’s leading rusher in 2011 with 1178 yards, the eighth best single season figure in school history. He was a major reason Clemson finished with a 10-4 record, a number-22 national ranking and the program’s first ACC Championship in 20 years.
