Jackson-King Day, in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The Rev. Jesse Jackson says his civil rights organization will announce its plans to fight for social justice and against poverty at several stops across South Carolina next week. Jackson said Wednesday his Rainbow Push Coalition will announce in Charleston on Monday night a 10-point plan to make the South better. He will continue with stops in Columbia and Greenville on Tuesday.

Chase Suspect

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) _ Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says a rape suspect led deputies on a chase, firing his shotgun at officers before crashing his vehicle.

SC Mom Arrested for Getting Son, 13, Drunk

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) _ Rock Hill police say they arrested a mother after her 13-year-old son told officers she got him drunk. Investigators said the boy's father called police early Sunday morning and told him his mother let him drink until he got drunk.

Unemployment Benefits

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ If unemployed workers in South Carolina can't find a job in six months, they would have to volunteer 16 hours weekly to continue getting a check under a bill up for debate by a Senate panel.

Public Hearing on Bus System Saturday

Saturday, January 7, from 11:00am to 1:00pm, at CMRTA Headquarters on Lucius Road, officials will host a public forum. Riders of Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority, CMRTA, will have a chance to respond to a reduction in services that could come as early as next month.

SC Firms Help Get New Home to Wounded Veteran

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Two firms that are part of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina are providing $20,000 to provide a mortgage-free home for an Army veteran wounded in Iraq. Spokesman Billy Quarles says the firms are presenting keys to the Columbia home Monday to retired Army 1st Sgt. Peter Lara, who suffered gunshot wounds during a firefight in Iraq in 2005.
