SC Math, Reading Scores Virtually Unchanged

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ South Carolina students' scores on national math and reading tests haven't changed much in two years and continue to hover below the national average. The U.S. Department of Education released data Tuesday showing South Carolina's fourth- and eighth-graders posted scores that were between two and five points below the national average.

Fake Social Worker

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ A Columbia man accused of posing as a social worker to take money from seven vulnerable adults faces new charges. Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott announced that 45-year-old Mitchell Smith was arrested Monday morning and charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult and simple possession of marijuana.

I-95 Repairs

SANTEE, S.C. (AP) _ Repairs to the bridge over Lake Marion on busy Interstate 95 in South Carolina have been completed about three weeks ahead of schedule. The state Transportation Department announced Thursday that the work was completed last weekend. It was originally expected to be finished in mid-November.

Plane of Missing SC Man Found Near Moncks Corner

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) _ The wreckage of a plane belonging to a Berkeley County man missing for two weeks has been located near the county airport near Moncks Corner. Authorities say 65-year-old Kenneth Tollett was found dead inside. Tollett was last seen Oct. 13 on his way to the airport. He regularly flew out of state and his family reported him missing on Sunday.

Inheritance Fraud

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities say a 38-year-old Columbia man has admitted defrauding a finance company by inflating the amount of his mother's inheritance. Prosecutors said Darial Chatman pleaded guilty Wednesday to wire fraud in federal court and faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine when he is sentenced next year.

21 Year Old Clemson Student Drowns

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ The Pickens County coroner says a 21-year-old Clemson student who was swimming with friends has drowned. Coroner Kandy Kelley said that Prashanth Elangovan (praz-HAWNTH ee-LAWN-go-vawn) was swimming at Twelve Mile Recreation Area in Clemson at about 6:30 p.m. Monday when he went under and didn't resurface.

GOP Debate Wofford

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The South Carolina Republican Party says GOP presidential candidates will debate at Wofford College. Party Chairman Chad Connelly announced Wednesday that the debate in Spartanburg on Nov. 12 will focus on national security and foreign policy and start at 8 p.m.

Lattimore To Travel With USC To Tennessee
