American Dream: The Power of the Sun

Tyler Ryan learns about the potential benefits of using solar power in your home

COLUMBIA SC (WOLO) – Solar power is considered the fastest growing source of electricity in the United States.  In fact, according to EcoWatch, Solar power accounted for 13.5% of electricity generated by renewable sources in 2021.  EcoWatch also cites that the following year, Americans installed enough panels on their collective homes to power 22 million houses.

Forbes ranks California as the state with the most number of homes that have solar panels installed, but South Carolina isn’t too shabby, ranked at 17 with over 244,000 homes powered by the Sun.

According to Solar Consultant “Solar” Stef Bromwell, the ability of the sun to cut down, and often times fully negate a power bill is very appealing to homeowners.

Solar Stef says that over time,  the panels will generate enough power to not only supply your home, but also create enough excess that the power company will provide credits, and in some cases pay cash to utilize the power that is generated by your panels.

There are a couple of caveats, however, according to Bromwell.  One is the physical location of the home.  She points out that in order to maximize the sun, having a roof that is in the general track of the suns position in the sky is helpful, and a lack of large trees blocking the sun.

She also points out that in order to get the most finical benefit, you want to make sure you aren’t moving any time soon, but also says that generally, solar panels will increase the allover value of your home.
