The Midlands Goes Green

Compost Bins

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — The Midlands is going green.

Saturday is Richland Recycles Day.

Be sure to head over to the South Carolina State Fair Grounds and drop off your recycling for free.  Richland County residents can drop off electronics, tires, used cooking oil, paint, mattresses and much more.

The recycling day runs from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Last year, nearly 1,000 vehicles dropped off 130,000 pounds of recyclable materials, including 45,000 pounds of electronics, 20,000 pounds of household chemicals and 10,000 pounds of tires.

Ahead of Richland Recycles day, there will be an educational recycling program for local students.   That will take place Friday at the Ellison Building at the S.C. State Fairgrounds from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Richland County is also partnering up with the City of Columbia to help save the planet.

They’re hosting a spring compost bin and rain barrel sale.   It’s all in an effort to protect our rivers, creeks and streams by reducing runoff and preventing pollution.  Compost bins are $55 and rain barrels are $68 each.

Online sales will close at 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 15.   Bins and barrels can be purchased online at http://www.rainbarrelprogram.org/columbia.
