CHAPIN, S.C. (WOLO) — Monday night, parents and school officials are expected to attend a Lexington-Richland Five school board meeting to discuss controversy around a recent lesson by a Chapin High English teacher. “I do not want an individual like that teaching my children,” says Michael Copeland, Parent of a Chapin High School Student. And Copeland says he has a reason. “He took down the American flag, when he was talking about symbols, and said this flag only represents the country. But, yet it’s just merely some cloth with colors on it, and then threw it down on the floor and stomped on it,” says Copeland. It’s an action that could cost the accused Chapin High teacher, Scott Compton, his job. “I hope he is terminated,” says Copeland. Michael Copeland brought the incident to district officials after his daughter, a Chapin High student, told him. “She was shocked, she just said she was absolutely mortified and people in the class were whispering like, ‘What is he doing?’,” says Copeland. Copeland, who says he too was shocked, sent the district an email explaining what happened. The case has since swirled local, state and national attention. Copeland says the community here has also been vocal on the issue, as well as his daughter’s fellow students at Chapin High. “She said that a lot of the students have complimented her and thanked her for doing what she did,” says Copeland. Copeland says through it all, he hopes his daughter learns one simple lesson, to always carry with her. “To stand up for what you believe in,” says Copeland. According to a district spokesperson, Compton was recommended for termination on January 9, 2013 and has 15 days to appeal. If Compton does not appeal, we are told the board will not need to take a vote. However, if he does appeal the board is expected to take up the matter January 28, 2013.
