Richland Coroner identifies woman who drove into the Broad River

RICHLAND CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford has identified the woman whose body was discovered after crashing a vehicle into the Broad River Wednesday.

According to Coroner Rutherford, the victim is identified as Tierra Hamer, 23, of Columbia, SC.

Deputies say they responded to a domestic incident at 1630 Longcreek Drive at 1 p.m., where a man said Hamer had just struck him with her vehicle and was attempting to do it again.

As deputies were arriving on scene, they said Hamer fled in her vehicle.

According to Sheriff Leon Lott, deputies were not in a chase but instead trying to initiate a traffic stop when she intentionally drove through the dead end of Omarest Drive and into the Broad River.

Between Columbia-Richland Fire and RCSD, multiple rescue teams were deployed into the water.

According to investigators, at approximately an hour and a half later, RCSD’s dive team located Hamer submerged under water. Despite several rescue attempts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Lott says there were no pattern of violence between the two involved in the incident.

This incident remains under investigation.
