KCSO deputy hit in head-on collison, driver will face charges
KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – A man involved last week in a collision with a Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office deputy is facing numerous charges.
Tony Evans Hayes, 55, of Camden was traveling southbound on US 1 in Cassatt when he struck a deputy who was traveling in the opposite direction head-on, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said.
The crash occurred on May 13 around 11 p.m.
According to Sheriff Matthews, Hayes was critically injured and was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland where he remains in the ICU.
Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say both vehicles were traveling at 55 miles per hour when Hayes crossed the center line and collided with the deputy.
Once Hayes is released from the hospital, he will be charged with second degree DUI, simple possession of marijuana and an ABC violation, following the discover of marijuana and an open container of alcohol in Hayes’ vehicle, officials say.
