State Health officials report Rabid Fox in Edgefield County, one person and one pet exposed

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– State health officials say a rabid fox has been confirmed in Edgefield County and one person and one pet were exposed.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health, the fox was found near Block Plant Drive and Calhoun Street in Johnston, and tested positive for rabies.

One person was exposed and has been referred to their health care provider. One dog was exposed and will be quarantined as required in the South Carolina Rabies Control Act, say officials.

Health officials say if you believe you, someone you know, or your pets have come in contact with this fox or another animal that potentially has rabies, please call DPH’s Aiken office at (803) 642-1637 during normal business hours (8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday) or after hours and on holidays at (888) 847-0902 (Select Option 2).

According to DPH, this fox is the first animal in Edgefield County to test positive for rabies in 2025. There have been 48 cases of rabid animals statewide this year, say health officials.
