Two men charged with murder for shooting at The Roost Apartments

 

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, 19-year-old Tyron Shelley and 20-year-old Ta’John Goodwin are being charged with murder.

On August 22, just after 12:30 p.m., deputies say they responded to The Roost Apartments at 1051 Southern Drive in reference to a shooting.

When deputies arrived, they say they located an adult victim with a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced dead on scene by EMS. The suspects fled before deputies’ arrival.

Investigators were able to identify a gold Chevy Tahoe as the suspect vehicle and locate both the vehicle and Tyron Shelley at Shelley’s residence in the Earlewood area. Shelley was taken into custody. During the execution of a search warrant at the residence, investigators located a firearm stolen out of Florence County. Shelley is charged with murder and detained at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

During the investigation, investigators identified a second suspect, Ta’John Goodwin. With cooperation from Goodwin’s family, Goodwin turned himself in at RCSD Headquarters on Saturday, Goodwin is also charged with murder and will be booked at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

UPDATE August 24th: Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford has released the identity of the victim as 19-year-old JoKayne Carter of Columbia. 

 “We will continue working with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to fully investigate this homicide, Coroner Rutherford says.

The case remains under active investigation. Further details will be released as they become available.

Investigators are still working to determine what led to the shooting.
