SC lawmakers pass Student Physical Privacy Act
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Students in South Carolina Public Schools will now be required to use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding with the gender on their birth certificate.
Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the General Assembly passed a measure that applies to all public schools and universities in the state.
Supporters say it protects the privacy of female students’ privacy and keeps men out of women’s spaces.
Opponents, like the ACLU, say the measure discriminates against transgender and non-binary students.
The bill now heads to Governor McMaster’s desk to be signed into law.
