SCDES: Air Quality Alert for several counties due to Georgia wildfires

SOUTH CAROLINA (WOLO) – The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services is issuing an Air Quality Alert for several counties today due to the Georgia wildfires.

The Code Orange Ozone Action Day goes into effect today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the following counties:

  • Abbeville
  • Aiken
  • Allendale
  • Anderson
  • Bamberg
  • Barnwell
  • Beaufort
  • Berkeley
  • Calhoun
  • Charleston
  • Cherokee
  • Clarendon
  • Colleton
  • Dorchester
  • Edgefield
  • Fairfield
  • Georgetown
  • Greenville
  • Greenwood
  • Hampton
  • Jasper
  • Kershaw
  • Laurens
  • Lee
  • Lexington
  • McCormick
  • Newberry
  • Oconee
  • Orangeburg
  • Pickens
  • Richland
  • Saluda
  • Spartanburg
  • Sumter
  • Union
  • Williamsburg

According to officials, a Code Orange forecast indicates that ground level ozone concentrations are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, which includes people with lung disease, older adults, and children.

State health officials are urging people with respiratory conditions to limit time outdoors or move activities inside if smoke is visible or noticeable.
