COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Sunday, May 3rd marks the 1-year anniversary of the murder of 22-year-old Logan Federico from Waxhaw, North Carolina.

Logan’s father, Stephen Federico, posted the following message on social media on Saturday, writing, “In Logan Federico’s case – the accused was arrested 39 times of those arrests 23 were felonies! Tomorrow (Sunday) will be the 2nd most difficult day of our lives! The day evil took Logan ! Just imagine how many other crimes he committed and didn’t get caught! Our beautiful daughter Logan Federico should still be here today! We shouldn’t have the struggles we have to deal with tomorrow because of systemic failures of the South Carolina judicial system! A significant percentage of criminals reoffend. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), 68% of released prisoners were arrested within 3 years, 79% within 6 years, and 83% within 9 years. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) notes that within 10 years of release, 82% of individuals released from state prisons were rearrested at least once.”

According to the Columbia Police Department, Federico was staying with friends at a home in the Old Shandon Neighborhood on the 2700 block of Cypress Street in Columbia.

Police say 30-year-old Alexander Dickey shot Frederico after breaking into the home and stealing several items, which included credit and debit cards.

He is also accused of going on a shopping spree with the stolen cards after the break-in and shooting.

Before Dickey’s arrest, he led police on a chase to a home in the Gaston area.

Dickey was sentenced to five years in prison for burglary in 2023. However, he was credited for time served and later released, during which time he allegedly murdered Federico.

Stephen spoke with ABC Columbia’s Lee Williams last May after after a bond hearing for Dickey. He described his daughter as a vibrant person with a zest for life.

“She had a mind of her own, she was willing to fight for the underdog. She was willing to take a deep conversation to make somebody feel really great about themselves. She didn’t hold punches, she told people like it was like I do. That’s one thing she had from her daddy, she wasn’t afraid to speak up,” Stephen says.

Dickey remains behind bars at the Lexington County Detention Center where he awaits trial. He has been charged with murder, two counts of first degree burglary, two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, two counts of grand larceny, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and three counts of financial transaction card theft.
