Fixing SC Roads

(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., — COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ With fixing South Carolina’s highways a recurring topic this election year, a plan from the state Department of Transportation concludes that the state will have to spend $60 billion on roads in the next quarter century. The draft 2040 Multimodal Transportation Plan notes that money is needed for both new roads and maintaining existing ones. But, the report says, under current revenue projections, the state will be about $1.5 billion short each year for highway needs. More money is going to be needed for roads as the state’s population of 4.7 million is projected to increase to more than 6 million by 2040. The department held a series of public hearings on the draft plan released last month and the public comment period closed Sept. 25. (Source: Associated Press)
