SC emergency officials hold earthquake drill

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The S.C. Emergency Management Division wants residents to prepare for a potential earthquake by taking part in a “Southeast Shakeout” drill.

Emergency officials say Thursday’s drill begins with a signal broadcast at 10:16 a.m. on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s tone-alert radio and television broadcasts.

South Carolina is one of the nation’s most seismically active states. Since February 2013, there have been 24 low-magnitude earthquakes recorded in the state. That includes a 4.1 earthquake in Edgefield on Feb. 14.

To assist, the division has produced the S.C. Earthquake Guide. It is available at Walgreens stores across the state, as well as online. It has information on what citizens should do before, during and after an earthquake.
