Suspect in Deputy Shooting Shot, Killed After Standoff

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WOLO/WCIV) — The man suspected of shooting a Berkeley County deputy is dead. After a standoff that lasted more than ten hours, Charleston police say the suspect, Jerome Caldwell of Mt. Pleasant, stepped out of the downtown Charleston apartment where he had barricaded himself for hours and shot at police. At that time police say they returned fire striking and killing the Caldwell. Caldwell was suspected of shooting Lieutenant Will Rogers of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department on May 14th outside a gas station in Monks Corner. Rogers is currently listed in critical but stable condition at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston.
