Landon Powell Designated for Assignment

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Former Gamecock Landon Powell was designated for assignment Friday night by the Oakland Athletics. The roster move came because the A’s acquired four prospects from Washington and needed to make room on its 40-man roster. The A’s already signed Powell to a one-year, $620K deal to avoid arbitration. He earned $420K last season. Powell, 29, hit .171 in 36 games for the A’s last season. He hit one home run, a deep blast at the Coliseum off the Giants’ Jeremy Affeldt in part of Oakland’s three-game sweep of the cross-town rivals. It’s unknown if the A’s plan to bring Powell back if he clears waivers.
