SC Gov Haley to announce anti-union measures
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says she wants to further clamp down on unions in a state that ranks among the nation’s least unionized.
Haley says the state’s anti-union status is her best tool in recruiting businesses to South Carolina.
The Republican governor said in her State of the State address last week that she plans to sign an executive order declaring striking workers ineligible for unemployment benefits. She also says she wants to force unions to disclose all of their financial data, saying that unions thrive in the dark.
According to the National Employment Law Project, South Carolina law already disqualifies unemployment insurance for striking workers. Unions already must report their financials to the federal Department of Labor. The reports are searchable on the federal agency’s web site.
