Hospital: SC Teen Mom Put Cotton Down Baby's Throat

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ Officials at the Medical University of South Carolina say a 17-year-old mother was arrested after she stuffed cotton down her infant daughter's mouth, then called for help. Authorities told WCSC-TV (http://bit.ly/ze4MP0 ) that they put a camera in the baby's room because the child had suffered several life-threatening episodes.

Voter ID Law: SC v. US

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, the state of South Carolina is suing the US Department of Justice over its rejection of South Carolina's Voter ID law that would require voters to show photo identification at the polls.

1 Fired from SC Jail After Inmate Escape

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ One employee has been fired and several others disciplined after an inmate escaped from the Berkeley County jail. Sheriff's spokesman Dan Moon says one person was fired, one employee was demoted and two others were suspended.

SC Tourism Targets SEC and ACC Fans

Consider them South Carolina's newest tourist attractions - linebackers in Carolina garnet and wide receivers in Clemson orange. Last fall for the first time the state's tourism agency targeted promotional messages to ACC and SEC fans in nearby states.

Tougher Penalties for First Time DUI's Sought

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) testified today in front of the South Carolina Senate Judiciary Subcommittee in support of legislation which would require all convicted drunk drivers to โ€˜blow before they goโ€™ by using an ignition interlock on their vehicle. They believe legislation, S 746, authored by Senator Joel Lourie, would help save lives and stop drunk driving.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has signed a bill that sets up the office of the state inspector general to investigate allegations of fraud, waste and abuse in state government.

ALLENDALE, S.C. (AP) _ The wife of University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides and USC's mascot Cocky are leading an event on nutrition and reading for 300 families in Hampton and Allendale counties.
