Kershaw County schools begin school year amid surge in COVID cases

South Carolina State University released its updated health and safety protocols for the upcoming semester. The new guidelines offer guidance regarding COVID-19 testing, vaccines and mask wearing on campus.
DHEC says the number of South Carolinians who lost their lives to COVID-19 is now past 10,000.

South Carolina State University and Walmart will host a vaccination event this Saturday at the Smith Hammond Middleton Memorial Center.
Lexington Medical Center will now offer vaccines on Sundays. A spokesperson for the hospital says the expansion is due to an increasing number of COVID-19 cases throughout the Midlands.
A top U.S. health official says while breakthrough COVID-19 infections can and will happen in people who’ve been vaccinated, the majority won’t get seriously ill or be hospitalized because the vaccines work.
The possibility of virtual learning was discussed at the Lexington-Richland Five School Board meeting on Monday. The board went over the district’s COVID-19 protocol and decision making guide.
DHEC reports 1,954 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 250 probable cases for a total of 2,204 cases. DHEC also reports 11 additional deaths in South Carolina.
With the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in the state, officials with Richland County are considering their next move in the fight against the virus.
