Drill Sergeant Hands Over Control of School

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The Army’s first female commandant of its elite drill sergeant school is being forced to give up her job, but she says she’s not giving up a fight for her reputation. Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa King hands responsibility for the Drill Sergeant School to Command Sgt. Maj. Michael McCoy in a ceremony Thursday at Fort Jackson. The switch comes just days after the Army lifted King’s six-month suspension, the reasons for which were never revealed. The Army said only the matter involved King’s conduct. King says she will remain in the Army and pursue her legal complaint that she was improperly suspended. The 50-year-old black woman argues she was unfairly targeted due to sexism and racism. An Army spokesman said the service is still looking into the complaint.
