WATCH: Rescued deer provides support for Pelion woman
A Pelion woman rescued a deer, not knowing the emotional support he would offer as she cares for her dying father
PELION, S.C. (WOLO) –There’s no question that animals can offer a special kind of support in stressful or tragic situations. We’ve seen the impact therapy dogs have in nursing homes, hospitals and schools, but one Pelion woman is getting through difficult days with a different kind of furry friend by her side.
Donna Aaron rescued a baby buck ten months ago. He was roughed-up by an acquaintance’s dogs. They called Aaron because she is licensed to rescue wildlife in Lexington County through the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. She nursed the baby back to health, calling him Mr. Roscoe P. Coltrane.
A few months after taking Roscoe in, she took her 70-year-old father in, nursing him 24 hours a day as he ends his battle with dementia.
“He’s just been a godsend to me, because sometimes at three or four o’clock in the morning, it’s just daddy and me and Roscoe in here, gettin’ it done,” Aaron says.
Aaron is licensed to do wildlife rescue for Lexington County through the Department of Natural Resources. She did all the necessary paperwork through D.N.R. to keep Roscoe legally.
While he does like napping on the bed or in front of the TV, Roscoe does venture off to explore in the woods during the day, but when Aaron calls, he comes running home.
