Senate Set to Debate Roads Bill Next Week

Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — The South Carolina Senate made progress on the measure to repair the state’s damaged roads. After several days of filibustering by several Republican senators, the Senate reached an agreement on Wednesday night that includes $400 in recurring funds from the states general fund to help fix the states roads.

In addition, the amendment does not include a gas tax and gives the Governor the power to appoint the Department of Transportation Commissioners and the bill reforms the State’s Infrastructure Bank.

“It’s a good solid plan, Secretary Hall has praised it,” said Senator Tom Davis. “It’s going to start address our roads and bridges and the people of South Carolina’s interest will be served.”
“It’s a win-win, said Senator Harvey Peeler. “To me it really is a great day in South Carolina.”

However, on Thursday the body did not start debate on the bill to give members of the Democratic caucus time to draft any amendments before next week.

“That really is a rain drop on Lake Murray to fixing the 1.3 billion dollar problem in this state,” said Senator Nikki Setzler. “I think there’s a lot that could be included to improve this bill. If you’re going to use this avenue to do what needs to be done it needs to be more money than $400 million.”
The Senate will be back in session on Tuesday to start debate on the bill. Senators hope to vote on the bill next week.
