State board approves golf resort for Lake Hartwell

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A state panel has approved plans for a $100 million golf resort planned for Lake Hartwell.

The Anderson Independent Mail reported (http://bit.ly/WPCHFQ) that the Budget and Control Board voted 4-1 on Tuesday to approve the planning for the site near Interstate 85 in Oconee County.

Elmon Henry and Robert Daffin of Sanctuary Pointe in Seneca plan to begin talking with potential partners for the project. Henry says he hopes construction can start next year.

Additional approval will be needed from the state and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Henry says there is nothing but a logging road in the area now.

Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom was the only board member to vote no. Eckstrom questioned whether the Upstate needs another golf course.
