COLUMBIA SC (WOLO)–Etiquette expert Pamela Eyring from the Protocol School of Washington says there is a crisis of civility and decorum pending within society.
Eyring sites the seventh annual Civility in America survey, which captures the American public’s views on civility in society with 75% stating incivility in this country has risen to “crisis” levels up from 65% in 2014.
“Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Youtube, Instagram – the list goes on and on with many ways to communicate electronically and so many pitfalls.” she says.
Eyring challenges you to take the social media code of conduct oath:
- I will be self-aware of my own communication style by taking into consideration what I’m sharing could hurt others, be seen as harassment, or highly offensive
- I will take the high-road and avoid negative or hateful banter in my postings and responses
- I will try to resolve a heated issue face to face, in a letter, email or phone call not publicly on social media (message instead of post – private vs. public)
- I will read the entire article and ensure it’s what I believe before sharing
- I will be a good reflection on my family, friends, employer and self and not be ignorant and stereotype against others
- I will message my concerns or feelings in a tasteful (not hateful) manner using facts and statistics not just emotion
- I will not post questionable photos of myself or post/tag others if perceived inappropriate or without their permission
