COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– At 5:24 p.m., Thursday many across the Midlands and beyond took to social media reporting they heard and felt and loud boom.
The ABC Columbia News team experienced the same thing inside station’s studio.
About two hours later, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that it was a sonic boom nearly four miles north, northeast of Saint Andrews. The location and time are approximate.
According said the recorded waves and eyewitness reports are consistent with a sonic boom and added that its standard magnitude calculation methods do not apply to sonic booms.
Ryan Turiak, owner of AMS Columbia, captured the sound of the boom from a roof camera placed on his hanger at Jim Hamilton-L.B. Owens Airport in downtown Columbia.
