Columbia, S. C. (WOLO) — Four days after a devastating earthquake hit Nepal, many are still sorting through the rubble. “The buildings, the temples I’ve grown up with all of them,” explained Nepal native, Deepesh Bagracharya. “Those are sights that I saw every day until 2007 when I moved. It’s sad that it’s gonna be different.” Bagracharya was born and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, one of the hardest hit cities in the quake. His family still lives there and he said they were fortunate to survive. “We’ve been living without any power, no electricity, no internet, a building right besides my house collapsed so it’s complete havoc right now,” said Bagracharya. With several aftershocks since Saturday, he said his family slept in tents and cars, scared to stay inside in fear of another aftershock. Deepesh called it heartbreaking as he sits thousands of miles away. “People need a lot of volunteers to lift people out from all the rubble, broken homes, and to be here, fit and fine but unable to do anything about it is just, the feeling of helplessness is immense,” he said. But in a situation so tragic, Deepesh said every effort counts. Back here in South Carolina, he’s set up a Go-Fund-Me page to help organizations on the ground in Nepal. “At this stage every little bit helps, even $5 will feed a family for 2 days,” said Bagracharya.
