Officials appealing federal judge’s ruling on witness signatures on absentee ballots
The battle over witness signatures on absentee ballots is far from finished.
South Carolina’s House Speaker wants to make what he says is an important change in the state’s election system before it gets tested by a close or controversial election.
Absentee ballots in South Carolina were turned in without required signatures at a lower rate in the 2020 election than the presidential election four years ago.
According to the South Carolina State Election Commission, 1,013,000 South Carolinians have returned their absentee ballots for the 2020 election so far. This more than doubles the previous record for absentee voting when 503,000 absentee votes were cast in the 2016 General Election.
In the latest development in battle regarding witness signatures on mail-in absentee ballots, the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the requirement for witness signatures on these ballots.
