City of Columbia officials say they have been working to develop a meal sharing plan for feeding the homeless.
Rapid Shelter Columbia, the community being built for people experiencing homelessness, is set to open November 1st. Officials from the City of Columbia gave progress updates earlier today on the pod community, located downtown on Calhoun Street.
A new village will be built at 191 Calhoun Street just off of Huger Street. The community will contain pods, or small cabins, built by a company called “Pallet shelters.”
City leaders say the goal is to have the 50 cabins ready for use by November 2022

Homelessness is on the rise in the United States. Thursday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released its 2020 Homeless Assessment Report. The report shows that homelessness increased nationwide for the fourth year in a row. According to HUD, on a single night in January of last year, more than 580,000 people were without a home.
The tenth annual “Operation Spread the Joy” campaign is now underway, hoping to bring holiday cheer to the homeless population in Columbia.
