South Carolina districts can continue to require face coverings to protect against the coronavirus in the state’s schools under an appellate court’s decision this week.
Columbia City Council voted to extend the city’s mask mandate this afternoon.
“We want to have every tool at our disposal so we can make the decision locally on how to best forward as to how it pertains to our students and school district, “said Alvin Pressley, superintendent of Newberry County School District.
The South Carolina Supreme Court says the state proviso banning school mask mandates is constitutional.
Governor Henry McMaster says he filed an emergency motion with the U.S. Court of Appeals, asking for a stay on the injunction of a budget proviso regarding mask mandates in schools, pending an appeal.
Beginning Thursday, officials with Richland School District Two say students and employees will be required to wear face coverings in schools.

School districts in South Carolina now have the authority to require masks and should check with their lawyers on what kind of accommodations they need to make for medically vulnerable students, the state’s education chief said Wednesday.
Tuesday, a federal district court granted a request to block South Carolina’s ban on mask mandates in schools. Governor McMaster says an appeal has been filed, and they will fight the ruling up to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
