Director of Public Health with DHEC, Dr. Brannon Traxler, says the 2021 data shows the total number of drug overdose deaths increased by more than 25% from 2020 to 2021.
Fentanyl is prescribed in anesthesia or pain management but in much lower doses than the fentanyl-laced pills on the streets.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) , which often gives emergency personnel doses of Narcan, has now supplied the Richland County Sheriff’s Department with nearly 600 doses of the life saving drug to make sure every deputy in the county has doses at their finger tips.
This afternoon, Governor Henry McMaster signed a bill that requires doctors to give certain people a co-prescription of Nalaxone when they are prescribed opiates.
Lexington County firefighters are doing their part to combat the opioid crisis.
