“The fact that all 32 murders were solved shows that our investigators are working closely with our community and do not give up on these victims. This senseless violence is not a law enforcement problem,” Sheriff Lott said. “We can solve the cases as they come in but that doesn’t stop the violence from happening- something has to change within the community.”
“We can put up metal detectors and create all kinds of policies and procedures. At the end of the day, if it is just us involved in that effort, we won’t be successful.”
Sheriff Lott says 12 individuals currently face charges related to the riot at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where two corrections officers were attacked.

Here in the Midlands, hundreds of converters are stolen every year. On Tuesday, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott joined Representative Todd Rutherford to explain a new law, sponsored by Rutherford, that will combat the growing thefts.
Thursday morning, the The Richland County Sheriff’s Department announced that Sheriff Leon Lott was named the 2021 South Carolina Sheriff of the Year by the SC Sheriff’s Association. This is Sheriff Lott’s second time winning the award, having also won in 2004.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says he is frustrated with the amount of gun violence in the community. The sheriff says there have already been eleven murders in the county this year, one more than at this time last year.
This afternoon, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott released the identity of a Fort Jackson soldier who was arrested for hijacking a school bus at around 7 a.m. The sheriff says 23-year-old Jovan Collazo will face 19 counts of kidnapping in addition to other charges.
Tomorrow is National Drug Take Back Day. This afternoon, Attorney General Alan Wilson and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott held a news conference encouraging South Carolinians to go by one of several drop off sites Saturday to drop off unused prescription medications.
