COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A University of South Carolina student who at one point was facing deportation has completed his PHD in chemistry.

In June of last year, Matthew Ariwoola, who is from Nigeria was facing arrest and deportation by ICE after his student visa was unexpectedly ended.

The ACLU filed a lawsuit on his behalf, and a federal judge halted any further action by the federal government.

On Tuesday, March 10, the American Civil Liberties Union announced that because of that decision Ariwoola now holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of South Carolina.
