Map redistricting debate continues this week

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Happening Tuesday, May 26, South Carolina senators are set to continue the debate on congressional redistricting.

On Saturday, lawmakers spent much of the day going through amendments and debating the bill.

Proponents narrowly passed a measure to speed up debate known as cloture, limiting each senator to one hour of speaking time.

However, opponents of the bill say the fight is far from over with lead Democrats hopeful that more Republicans will vote against the bill.

Here’s a look at what lawmakers had to say during Saturdays debate.

According to the South Carolina Election Commission, more than 4,000 absentee and more than 300 military ballots have already been cast.

Even if the map passes in the Senate Tuesday and makes it to the governor’s desk by Wednesday, May 27, opponents say it will most likely face numerous lawsuits.

The primary is June 9.

The early voting period begins tomorrow.
