Good Morning Columbia anchor helps rescue accident victim

Monica Rivers is seeing who she calls her angel again, for the first time since her accident.

That angel, is ABC Columbia News anchor Curtis Wilson. “He means the world to me. Had it not been for him at that time, the angel that god sent to me. I know we all have angels. God has ones assigned to us. And if it was just for that moment on that date, Curtis Wilson was the angel assigned to Monica Rivers,” Rivers says.

New details on ambushed deputies at Carriage Oaks subdivision

At around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday August 3, deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department were met with gunfire after they responded to what turned out to be a false 9-1-1 call at the Carriage Oaks subdivision in Northeast Columbia.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott held a press conference today to share new details on last week’s ambush.

School Resource Officers attend crisis intervention training

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department held its annual crisis intervention training for Richland County’s school resource officers. The annual event is sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Mental Health and certified through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, 3-5 million children in the United States have a mental illness.

Tax Free Weekend approaches, shoppers discuss back-to-school purchases

A variety of purchases will be exempt from South Carolina’s 6% sales tax during Tax Free Weekend. Exemptions on select items begin tomorrow and last through Sunday. Tax-free items range from clothing, accessories, and shoes to school supplies, backpacks, and computers.

With the new school season being just around the corner, Walmart is ready to help shoppers find the most budget-conscious ways to check items off of their back-to-school lists.

Deputies ambushed in Northeast Columbia subdivision

Sheriff Leon Lott says deputies with Richland County Sheriff’s Department were ambushed with gunfire at around 5:30 a.m. this morning at Carriage Oaks subdivision in Northeast Columbia.

Deputies were called to the neighborhood over a possible domestic dispute. But when the deputies arrived to the home, the homeowners told deputies that they had no dispute and didn’t call the police. As deputies left the home, more than fifteen shots were fired from an assault rifle in their direction–striking the deputies’ vehicles.

Teacher organizations discuss school staffing concerns

As the school year approaches, many teachers face numerous concerns along with the excitement of a new year.

Staffing shortages are the biggest concern for many school districts. According to the Center for Educator Recruitment Retention and Advancement, there were over 1,100 teacher vacancies across South Carolina as of this February. Currently some districts still have over 100 vacancies to fill.

Midlands resident helps victims of Kentucky flooding

As rescue teams continue to help victims of Kentucky’s flooding, some local Midlands residents are doing their part to help as well.

Bob Mann, a Gaston resident, arrived in Kentucky this past Saturday. He and other American Red Cross volunteers are currently camped out at the University of Pikeville. Each day part of his job is to help find places for flood victims to stay.
