(AP) Some scientists say water seeping deep underground may be causing earthquakes in South Carolina. More than 60 earthquakes have been recorded since December around Lugoff and Elgin, northeast of Columbia.
The United States Geological Survey reported another earthquake near Elgin Friday.
The US Geological Survey reports that around 4,000 people felt Tuesday afternoon’s earthquake, including those as far north as Charlotte and far south as Aiken.
The strongest of these earthquakes shook the Midlands Sunday morning. The 3.4 magnitude earthquake was felt by many Elgin residents.
The United States Geological Survey reported a 2.8 magnitude earthquake near Elgin this afternoon.

ELGIN, S.C. (WOLO) -United States Geological Survey reports an earthquake hit just outside of Elgin. According to the report, the earthquake happened Friday morning at 11:35 a.m. about 3.9 miles southeast of Elgin. The USGS says the quake measured at a 1.8 magnitude.
