South Carolina’s $11 billion budget heading to governor

South Carolina’s nearly $11 billion budget has been sent to the governor’s desk as lawmakers cut close the deadline to get the spending plan in place before it begins July 1. There is something for almost everyone in the budget, including raises for most state employees, teachers and law enforcement officers.

Demonstrators gather at the Statehouse to confront ‘Confederate state of mind’ on anniversary of Charleston Massacre

Right now, a rally is happening at the Statehouse, and organizers say the purpose is to confront the state of mind that allows white supremacy to exist through things like racial profiling, and Confederate monuments. This comes on the six year anniversary of the Charleston Massacre, where Dylann Roof gunned down nine African Americans at Emanuel AME Church.

Senate panel votes no confidence in Juvenile Justice leader

A group of state senators investigating South Carolina’s juvenile prison system have voted they have no confidence in Department of Juvenile Justice Director Freddie Pough. The vote Wednesday by a Senate subcommittee investigating the agency came after current and former teachers and jail officers testified that conditions keep getting worse.

SC House budget: Raises for public workers; no vaccine lotto

The South Carolina House has put its final touches on the state’s nearly $11 billion budget. The spending plan for the year starting in July includes raises for teachers, law enforcement officers and nearly every state employee. It won’t include million-dollar drawings for people who are vaccinated against COVID-19.
